For years, Green Lake businesses have offered views of the water: a café with a lake glimpse, a seafood counter with patio seats angled toward swimmers and paddleboarders. The 2.8-mile paved path also draws a few thousand people who walk, jog, and roll every day, rain or shine, regardless of what's on the menu next door.
This summer brought a new business near the lake: Easy Pace Brewing. A few blocks away, a storefront has housed three different restaurant concepts over a handful of years, offering another snapshot of the area's changing business mix.
Easy Pace Brewing opened directly across from Green Lake Park this summer, and the choice to build it as a standalone brand is the interesting part. The people behind it also own Gasworks Brewing, which opened a new production brewery and taproom of its own in SoDo this summer. They could have stretched the Gasworks name across town. Instead they built something new, aimed squarely at the loop crowd: a full kitchen with pizza and burgers, a dog- and kid-friendly patio, and programming built around running groups rather than happy hour regulars. The Infatuation described it this way: "Green Lake's new brewpub caters to run clubs."
That is a specific bet. It assumes the person finishing a lap wants a beer and a slice within a few minutes of stopping, not a sit-down meal requiring a reservation. So far, the bet looks like it's paying off. Check-ins on beer-tracking apps through the first half of August show the taproom filling up on weekend afternoons, right when the loop is busiest.

The restaurant concepts at this storefront and Easy Pace's run-club programming offer two different examples of businesses near the lake. Each has its own approach to serving people spending time in the area.
Duke's has Dockside at Duke's, a dedicated event and wedding venue on Densmore Ave N with its own catering menu for anniversaries, birthday parties, and family reunions.

Walk ten minutes uphill from the lake and the pattern holds, just on a different clock. The PhinneyWood Art Walk returned to the business district stretching from 59th and Phinney near Woodland Park Zoo up to 90th and Greenwood on August 14 and 15, filling a stretch of over 250 locally owned shops, galleries, and bakeries with photography, sculpture, glass, and fiber work for a single weekend. It doesn't happen every week. It happens on a schedule the neighborhood has learned to plan around, and businesses along Greenwood Avenue treat it as a fixed point on the calendar rather than a bonus.
The Phinney Farmers Market runs on a tighter, weekly rhythm by comparison. Every Friday from 3 to 7pm, June through late September, vendors set up in the upper parking lot of the Phinney Neighborhood Association at 6532 Phinney Ave N. This season brought in new regulars, including Ojaswe Co. for South Asian chickpea chilla pancakes and Loki Fish Co. for wild-caught salmon, alongside the returning lineup. That's the same logic as Easy Pace's patio and Duke's event calendar, just running on a different clock. The market doesn't try to be everything every day. It shows up once a week, reliably, and the neighborhood has organized its Friday evenings around that reliability.
The examples reflect different rhythms around Green Lake and nearby business districts: the daily movement of the loop, a weekend art walk, and a weekly market. At 6900 East Green Lake Way N, three restaurant concepts have occupied the same storefront over a few years, while Easy Pace offers another option near the lake.
That mix is one way to read Green Lake, Phinney Ridge, and Greenwood: alongside new businesses, the area has events and gathering places that reflect different routines.
